A group of professionals from Uasin Gishu county have condemned recent utterances by the National Assembly Leader of Majority Adan Duale against former Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) chairperson Sarah Serem.
Duale had told Members of Parliament to be ruthless while vetting Serem who has been nominated by President Uhuru Kenyatta as the Kenyan ambassador to China.
Addressing the press in Eldoret town on Tuesday, the group led by its convenor Phillip Chebunet termed Dule's sentiments as ill-intended.
“It is sad that a leader of his calibre can utter such words that the vetting exercise is a perfect opportunity for MP’s to settle an old score. The comments are prejudicial and may be used to change her nomination,” said Chebunet.
The professionals say when Sarah Serem was in office, she did her work according to the law and decisions she made should not be used by MPs to deny her the ambassadorial post.
“Duale’s irresponsible comments are not only meant to intimidate the vetting committee but also to influence the whole house since he commands the majority," added Winny Cheruto, a member of the group.
The group now want the Parliamentary Committee of Powers and Privileges to name and censure Duale for what they say is bringing the house to disrepute.
They also want the former SRC boss to be vetted according to the due process and the applicable laws.
Serem is expected to undergo vetting for on Thursday in the National Assembly.
