The Ukay Centre in Westland has finally been brought down fully. The building was demolished as part of the government initiative to recover riparian land.
The last standing section of the building collapsed on Thursday as onlookers cheered.
A giant cloud of dust hovered in the air and when it settled, everything was flattened.
Focus now shifts to Taj Mall in Embakasi with the government issuing a notice of two weeks. However, owner Ramesh Gorosia has dared the government to bring down.
“If you want to demolish this building do it, I don’t care, I am tired of hearing about its demolition now for over five years,” said Gorasia, owner of AirGate Center Mall, formerly Taj Mall.
“I have suffered enough since rumours of demolitions losing Sh2 to 3 billion in rentals, it is enough. Please bring it down even now. I don’t care,” he said.
The mall has been build on land reserved for expansion of OutRing road.
The Kenya National Highways Authority was forced to alter the cause of the road, a move that has led to traffic snarl up in the area.
