Political activist Shailja Patel has vowed not to honor a court order to pay journalist Tony Mochama for defaming him.
Shaija together with Professor Wambui Mwangi were found guilty of defamation after they accused Mochama of sexual harassment.
Nairobi Senior Resident Magistrate Addah Obura on August 5, 2019 ordered the duo to pay the journalist Sh9 million damages.
Shailja and Wambui were also ordered to apologize to Mochama through the court within 14 days, and a mandatory injunction against them was also issued, restraining them from ever contacting, writing or causing the writing of defamatory statements about the Standard Group journalist.
On Friday, Shailja, who has gone to self-imposed exile, said she would rather commit suicide than be forced to pay or issue an apology to Mochama, who she accuses of 'harming' women.
The political activist termed Obura's ruling as 'evil', adding it was meant to propagate sexual harassment against women.
"I'd cut my own throat before paying a penny or writing an apology to Tony Mochama, who has harmed and continues to harm, so many women. This evil judgment enables all men in Kenya to assault women with impunity, and then extort them if they dare to tell," she tweeted.
Mochama sued the two women after they claimed he sexually assaulted Shailja during a lunch meeting at Prof Wambui’s house situated in Nairobi’s Loresho area in 2014.
The court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove the journalist sexually harassed the activist and found the duo guilty of defamation.
