A section of Members of Parliament (MPs) allied to Deputy President (DP) William Ruto now claim that opposition leader Raila Odinga is behind plot to impeach him (Ruto).
The legislators allege that Raila is ‘salivating’ for Ruto’s seat and wants to use impeachment to occupy it.
Speaking to journalists at Parliament Buildings in Nairobi on Tuesday, the over 15 lawmakers claimed that Raila is silently pushing for Ruto's impeachment.
In a joint statement read by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, the lawmakers dared Siaya Senator James Orengo to table the motion in the House.
Nyoro said that the motion does not have any grounds that warrants Ruto’s impeachment.
“We know Raila has always wanted to get power because he cannot do it through the ballot, he wants to do it through the backdoor,” Nyoro said.
The MPs vowed to humiliate Orengo’s motion, adding that Raila should wait for 2022 if he wants to ascend to power.
Orengo says he has sufficient grounds to push for Ruto’s impeachment.
The vocal Senator further argues that the constitution allows President Uhuru Kenyatta to pick another deputy if Ruto is impeached.
However political analysts argue that it might not be easy for Orengo to impeach Ruto.
According to Peter Ngure, a Kiambu based political pundit, Orengo needs support of two-thirds from MPs and Senators before his motion can be tabled in the House.
The analyst further argues that the impeachment motion has to be scrutinized by a special Senate committee.
Raila Junior is among Kenyans who are backing Orengo’ motion to impeach DP Ruto.
On Tuesday, the Raila Odinga's son said Orengo is within his constitutional right to initiate the impeachment motion against the Deputy President.
