Speaking during an interview on Musyi FM on Friday morning, Muli said that lawmakers are also public servants who should be accorded the same benefits.

He argued that it's despicable that when legislators want allowances they are branded as greedy yet other public servants get the same services without being criticised.

"MPs are also public servants who are entitled to house allowances in accordance with the law and people should stop calling them greedy when they ask for what belongs to them," said Muli.

He said that last year, the court asked the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to pay deputy governors house allowances, wondering why there would there be noise when lawmakers ask for their right.

The lawmaker said it was unfair and contrary to the law for MPs to be sidelined, adding that those politicising the issue are seeking cheap publicity.

SRC last week termed the legislators' move as illegal and unconstitutional.

The commission has said it will petition the court to stop MPs from getting the allowances.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, SRC chair Lyn Mengich said it will seek to recover any money already paid to the MPs.
