Residents of Waa in Kwale county had a rare opportunity of seeing the biggest fish they had never seen.
They thronged Zote Beach along the Indian Ocean to get a glance of a sperm whale which was found dead on Saturday.Several locals took photos of the mammal after it was washed by waters to the public beach.
Residents said officers from the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) were called in after residents complained of a foul smell that was emanating from the dead mammal.
According to the KWS Community Warden Edward Karanja, the sperm whale is estimated to be 14 metres long and weighs about five tonnes.
According to Wikipedia, the sperm whale migrates seasonally for feeding and breeding. Females and young males live together in groups, while mature males (bulls) live solitary lives outside of the mating season.
Females give birth every four to twenty years, and care for the calves for more than a decade.
A mature sperm whale has few natural predators, although calves and weakened adults are sometimes killed by pods of orcas (killer whales).
