Drugs and laboratory equipment belonging to the Government of Kenya (GoK) have been recovered from private clinics in Machakos County.
They were discovered after Governor Alfred Mutua and Machakos police led by the town's Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Roda Kanyi raided some of the private clinics in Machakos town on Thursday.
"We were shocked to find unqualified people treating patients who had been referred to the private clinics by some of my health workers from Machakos level 5 Hospital," Mutua said.
Mutua said he was disappointed to find medicines and equipment labeled GoK in the clinics.
"Some of the quack doctors locked up people in the clinic and ran away when they saw us," he added.
The governor said he was heartbroken to find innocent patients who had sold land and goats to access medical treatment in private clinics, instead of getting free medication in public hospitals.
He later toured the Machakos Level 5 Hospital where he directed that no patient should be referred to any pharmacy, X-ray services, lab, etc.
"It is our responsibility to provide these services," Mutua said.
Mutua said DCI officers are doing investigations to arrest the cartels which have been sabotaging Machakos government's hospitals to benefit private clinics.
"The government will never spare anyone found culpable of the vice," he added.
