For the last few years, Eldoret has become home to hundreds of South Sudanese, most of them being students and scores of other business people.
The South Sudanese cultural believe is so strong that anybody who violates it is subjected to severe punishment.
Hivisasa spoke to a number of South Sudanese ladies in Eldoret’s Kapsoya estate and found out that most of them are single and do not easily hang around with Kenyan men.
According to them, virginity is a holy dignity which should be guarded at all costs. Besides, their norms do not allow them to get married to men from other countries.
This is attributed to the high cost of dowry set by the South Sudanese community.
“The cheapest dowry price that can be accepted for a South Sudanese lady is a minimum of 100 cows and a huge money price, so this scares away most foreign men,” said Nya Gatkuith Yar, a South Sudanese student living in Kapsoya estate.
“Sex in our community is a tool mainly meant for reproducing and we do not engage in it for leisure, that is why most South Sudanese ladies leaving here in Eldoret are single,” she added.
Thomas Magok, a South Sudanese national based in Eldoret echoes the sentiments.
“In our culture, sex before marriage is a serious sin and the consequences are harsh, if one is found, he/she can be punished accordingly,” said Magok adding that South Sudanese men value their ladies as assets.
It is believed that a majority of South Sudanese ladies can stay for long without intimacy while waiting to get married first before engaging in the act. Only a few engage in sexual acts before or outside marriage and they do so secretly.
