Thousands of school going kids in the county go without food.

A spot check conducted by this writer in Makueni County established that a lot of school going children are forced to go to school in order to feed.

Philip Musyoki, headteacher Unoa primary school in Wote town told this writer that he has a huge burden on his back of ensuring the over a thousand pupils in his school get something to eat.

“The kids sometimes fail to come to school once the school faces food shortage but when we have it in abundance they are all present," Musyoki said.

Musyoki said parents have stopped paying money for food and the school, not being under the government, feeding program has proved quite a challenge.

Musyoki now has turned to well-wishers calling for help citing that if the drought continues to bite, he may not be able to feed the pupils.

"I'm calling upon wellwishers who can help with supplements for the children to please chip in and help, it's a struggle," he said.

However, he disclosed that getting water in the school has been a challenge and when the taps run dry they are forced to buy from outside.

Unoa is among many schools facing drought in Makueni most affected parts being Kibwezi and Mbooni primary schools.
