As a fight against corruption intensifies, Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has proposed that this year's budget should not be passed until lifestyle audit is conducted.
Addressing the press in Mombasa, Mutua said senior government official should be subjected to a lifestyle audit.
According to the Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader, the rate of graft in the country is alarming and as a remedy, he proposed that Parliament should not pass budgets until relevant officials are audited.
"To ensure that new budget allocations are not used to make a few people rich while the rest of Kenyans who fund the budget through taxation wallow in poverty, I am proposing that no budget should be passed by legislative bodies until concerned leaders undertake lifestyle audits," said Mutua.
He also wondered why government officials resist scrutiny of their wealth noting that "this makes them look like thieves to members of the public."
Mutua who has declared interest for the 2022 presidential seat said leaders such the President, Deputy President, Governors, Cabinet Secretaries, Judges and other state officers should undergo lifestyle audits.
"We must show by action that we are fighting corruption. This is the only way to rescue our country because of TUMECHOKA, " he noted.
