Kathiani MP Robert Mbui has publicly expressed his interest in vying for Machakos gubernatorial seat in 2022.
Mbui has exuded confidence that he is the best shot to succeed the incumbent Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua.
However, the MP will be facing a stiff competition, more so, from his Wiper colleagues not to mention other candidates who too will be in the race for the county's top seat.
Other Wiper politicians who have equally declared their interests for the same seat in 2022 polls include Mavoko MP Patrick Makau, ex-Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama, and former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti, among others.
In 2017, Wiper politicians literally begged Mbui to vie for the Machakos gubernatorial seat since the party didn’t have a ‘strong’ candidate to dethrone the incumbent and Wiper rebel Alfred Mutua.
Machakos residents also mounted pressure on the MP to ascend to governorship due to his impeccable track record, but he disappointed them.
He had high chances of dethroning the incumbent since he would have had total support from Wiper party and its supporters across the Machakos County.
There were claims that Mbui adamantly refused to cave in, claiming he was still not ready to vie for the position and chose to instead defend his parliamentary seat.
Due to that, the party was forced to settle on former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti for the position.
Sadly, Ndeti lost in the August 8, 2017 elections.
However, there is a flicker of hope which depends on the Supreme Court's decision over Mutua’s re-election appeal case.
