The incident happened on Sunday in Mwamosioma village, Kisii County.

Area Chief Lawrence Omari confirmed the incident.

Omari said the mother, Norah Rang'ondi returned home from the market and found Sh2,000 she had kept in her handbag missing.

She suspected the daughter had stolen it.

"Rang'ondi found Sh2,000 missing from her handbag. She opted to burn her daughter after she realized she is the one who took the money from the handbag," said the chief who added that the woman didn't bother taking the daughter to hospital following the burn injuries she sustained.

"The girl reported to Kianyabinge primary school on Monday morning when the teachers noticed that she could not concentrate on her studies. The head teacher informed me about the incident. I rushed to the school and found the mother at the teacher's office," he added.

The girl was later taken to KTRH for treatment while the mother was surrendered to Kisii police station for court processing.
