Deputy President William Ruto has reacted on the ongoing maize politics.
Ruto said the government is planning to increase rice production to ease too much reliance on maize.
He said there is a plan to produce potatoes five times and rice by 300 percent.
Ruto spoke at Nakuru International Investment Conference (NIICO) in Naivasha where he represented President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday.
He said farmers should diversify their crops and stop targeting profits from maize alone.
Ruto challenged North Rift politicians who said Avocados cannot be stored saying producers should seek a market, not storage facilities.
This caused a stir at the event.
"I wonder as we seek to start producing high-income produce such as avocados, some politicians are debating about maize storage instead of seeking new markets,” Ruto said.
"The products are not to be stored but to be taken to the market," he added
Maize politics has caused a stir in the North Rift region.
MPs from the region have taken sides on the challenges faced by local maize farmers.
Ruto has been silent on the maize debate for long.
A few weeks ago Keter, Tiren and Kutuny said Ruto was telling farmers to diversify so that he can supply maize to National Cereals and Produce Board.
The trio mentioned a 500,000 acres maize plantation in Congo, saying Ruto will harvest and supply to Kenya.
