Recounting events in Kenya that left over 1,300 people dead, deceased former UN Chief Kofi Annan termed the 2007-08 violence as the worst crisis he ever mediated.

Along with former South Africa and Mozambique First Lady Graca Matchel Mandela and Tanzani Benjamin Mkapa, Annan brokered peace deal between retired President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga.

Last year while celebrating 9th anniversary since successfully mediating in Kenya, Annan said the peace deal improved management of elections in Africa.

“My role in mediating was amongst the most intensive and enduring of all my interventions,” Dr Annan had tweeted then.

He went on: "“Several key elections in Africa have unfolded much more peacefully since then, but we have a long way still to go.”

When news about his death rocked the world on Saturday, Raila eulogized him as a "tragic loss" to Africa and international community.

Further, he said, Annan monitored the Kenyan situation until peace accord was fully implemented.

"This is a tragic loss to Africa and the world. We all remember how he remained in Kenya to ensure peace accord was fully implemented."

It is after the crisis that ICC investigated Kenyan violence and released names of six people among them President Uhuru Kenyatta who would later be acquitted of crimes against humanity in the Hague based court.
