His election has been opposed by his Kwale counterpart Salim Mvurya who argues that he had been promised the position by the Jubilee Party.

According to Mvurya, he was meant to be the automatic successor of Governor Josphat Nanok, once the latter vacated office.

In a statement shortly after his election, the ODM deputy party leader stated that he was keen to strengthen devolution for rapid development of the nation.

He urged the leaders to join hands with the National Government to ensure that they successfully implement the Big 4 Agenda.

Oparanya will be deputised by Governor Mwangi wa Iria of Murang'a county.

He becomes the forth council chair after, former chairs; Isaac Ruto (Bomet), Peter Munya (Meru) and Nanok.

Other contestants who were in race include; Nanok, Anne Waiguru of Kirinyaga, Jackson Mandago of Uasin Gishu, and Prof Anyang' Nyong'o of Kisumu.
