Deputy President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga on Saturday shook hands at Narok amid an escalating rivalry between them over the 2022 elections.
Odinga was the first to arrive at Narok for the Madaraka Day celebrations. The DP and his wife Mama Rachael Ruto arrived later and could be seen walking to the VIP area where they shook hands with Raila and other guests.
For several weeks now, the two have been attacking each other with DP Ruto often throwing jibes at Mr Odinga over the 2022 polls.
Last week in Naivasha, Ruto accused Raila of straining the relationship between Kenya and the United Arab Emirates over the Sh400 million fake gold scandal.
“Raila should carry his own cross on the gold issue and stop putting in jeopardy job and business opportunities for thousands of Kenyans in UAE,” he said as quoted by the Standard.
However, in his defence, Mr Odinga dismissed the claims, arguing that he was a whistleblower in the scandal. He accused Ruto of witch-hunt.
“I was the whistle-blower in the fake gold syndicate when I discovered some people were using senior government officials’ names to con businessmen,” he said.
This is the first time the two are meeting in a public gathering amid weeks of scuffling.
