A University student who was due to graduate shocked villagers of Masabo village in Keera area, Nyacheki in Kisii County after he hanged himself on Saturday night.
It is alleged that the deceased Robert Ongoro hanged himself using a rope protesting his parents' decision to oppose his plan to marry a woman from the Luo community.
According to the deceased father Simon Manoti, his son wanted to marry before graduating.
"My son informed me about his plans to marry a woman from the Luo community. After consulting his mother, we asked him to hold on to graduate before getting married," said Manoti.
The bereaved father said his son was unhappy and threatened to take his own life.
"I thought he was joking when he said he will commit suicide. His body was found by his mother dangling from a tree," he noted.
Area chief Emmanuel Orang'i confirmed the incident and warned parents against opposing their children's choices.
"Robert has been a good person without any criminal record. It is unfortunate that we lost him," he noted.
Orang'i said the body was moved on Sunday morning to Kisii Teaching and referral hospital morgue.
