On June 27, 2017, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka was embarrassed after NASA supporters publicly rejected Julius Malombe, his preferred Kitui gubernatorial candidate.
The crowd did not give Malombe a chance to address them, they chanted songs in praise of the incumbent governor Charity Ngilu.
The locals said they did not want to be addressed by the former Kitui governor.
Malombe's efforts to address the crowd went futile forcing him to leave the VIP's podium.
“Yes, NASA allied parties are competing with each other in the elections, but the strength of the party will be measured by the votes garnered. NASA is going to win this election but I don’t want to be a deputy president without governor and foot soldiers in all assemblies to implement our agenda,” Kalonzo said.
Ngilu later came out saying she had no problem with Kalonzo but time for change had come.
The former Lands Minister conducted rigorous campaigns before she later trounced Malombe in one of the most watched races ahead of the 2017 polls.
Both Malombe and Ngilu supported NASA coalition whose presidential candidate was Raila Odinga with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as his running mate.
