Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has proposed the construction of a cancer study center in the country as a way of immortalizing departed Safaricom boss Bob Collymore.
Collymore succumbed after a long battle with cancer on Monday last week, was cremated on Tuesday, and his funeral service held on Thursday the same week.
The county boss has now called for the formation of the institution in one of the local universities, as a way of increasing the number of oncologists in the country to battle the disease.
The county chief, who is a cancer survivor, says that with cases of cancer being on the rise, there is need for the nation to establish the most effective counter measures.
He says that lack of specialized doctors have forced many Kenyans to seek medical attention abroad.
He also wants the center to train cancer nurses, oncology specialists, medical physicists and to collaborate with leading cancer schools offering similar services.
In 2011, the late Collymore was an important pillar in the operations of the Africa Cancer Foundation which has been offering charitable activities.
Collymore succumbed after nine years at the helm of the company, with his position having been given to his predecessor Michael Joseph on an interim capacity.
