A group of 12 men armed with knives and other lethal weapons stormed Mwea MP Peter Gitau’s function on Saturday and made away with Sh20,000.
The robbers had attempted to snatch a gun from a police officer who was providing security at the function in Mwea.
The unidentified goons took away Sh20,000 the officer had and tore his clothes.
The policeman in the scuffle with the youth, however, managed to shoot in the air dispersing his attackers who disappeared into the neighbourhood.
MP Gitau was whisked away from the scene by his bodyguards.
He had just commissioned Mwangaza Water Project in Kimbimbi Trading Centre in his constituency.
The lawmaker, who has since reported the incident at Wang’uru Police Station, claimed one of his bodyguards had his arm twisted and injured as he wrestled the aggressors.
Gitau accused his political rivals of hiring the goons to disrupt his function.
“Competition is healthy if it is exercised fairly. Mwea constituents should not be exposed to violence because of our competition as politicians,” the MP said, as reported by edaily.co.ke.
