Twelve drivers have been arrested in Thika for drunk driving and breaking of traffic rules. The drivers included five from private vehicles and seven drawn from public service vehicles, according to Thika traffic boss Dennis Mwangangi. The police boss accused the drivers of being regular traffic offenders. “We’re not going to allow impunity reign in our roads anymore,” said Mwangangi, adding that the suspects will be taken to court and charged with the offences. He warned other drivers in the area breaking traffic rules to shape up or ship out. Mwangangi added that alcoblow will continue to be used to identify drunk drivers. “Those who continue to put other people’s lives at a risk because of drinking while drunk should know when we get them, there will be no compromise on the matter. They will be arrested and charged,” the traffic boss said on Wednesday. Many accidents recently have been blamed on drunk driving, making the government to re-introduce the breatherisers in Kenyan roads after they were withdrawn few years ago on health and hygiene grounds. However, they have continued to face a stiff opposition with the public even devising ways to escape arrests, including opening social media pages to keep track of where the traffic police are laying blocks.
