The week-long operation saw at least 12 illegal fuel dens demolished.

The operation also involved inspection of all fuel selling locations along the Eldoret-Malaba highway.

Among key areas where the operation targeted involved Jua Kali, Tairi Mbili, Maili Nne and Musembe areas where the 12 dens were identified and demolished.

Speaking to the press after the inspection, Uasin Gishu Administration Police (AP) Commander Augustine Nthumbi said several suspects were also arrested during the crackdown.

“Already several of them have been arraigned in court and it’s now up to the courts to make a decision and we are hopeful they will be convicted,” said Nthumbi.

“Apart from demolishing the dens, we also made some recoveries like the tank you see here which was being used in mixing petrol with kerosene and diesel before selling to unsuspecting motorists,” he added.

The AP Commander said they had launched an investigation into how those involved in the illegal business get the fuel.

The crackdown on the fuel dens comes barely a fortnight after the ERC Robert Pavel Oimeke said they had identified over 23 dens that would soon be shut down.
