Paul Owuor Omingo, an accountant at the hospital and Solomon Odeny, a senior employee at Wananchi Telecom reportedly stole Sh26, 153, 898 from the health facility.

The crime was reportedly committed between July 2012 and September 2016.

The two denied the charges after they were arraigned before Senior Principal Magistrate Margaret Muthuku.

According to Maureen Musumba, a doctor's payroll accountant who testified in the case, the suspects allegedly committed the theft by penetrating the online payment portal.

She said that she had been asking Owuor to help her with preparing the payroll and suspects that it there that the latter and his accomplice found the opening to steal the money.

“I am a doctors’ payroll accountant at the hospital and my duties include preparing the payroll for medical consultants and other doctors who were offering services at Mater Hospital," she said as quoted by the Standard.

Musumba, however, said that Owuor did not have the password to the online payment system. She at the same time noted that she has never met the second suspect.

The case will be heard on June 11, 2019.
