Former Meru gubernatorial hopeful Dr.Kilemi Mwiria has asked the government to pay unemployed college and university graduates Sh10,000 monthly after their graduation before they secure employment.
Speaking at an interview with NTV, Dr.Mwiria castigated the government's move to arrest graduates who have defaulted on HELB loans, saying that they experience immense suffering as a result of unemployment and lack of capital to start a business.
He said that there are countries which had tried the same and they are now ahead in terms of addressing the unemployment menace.
Mwiria observed that parents had invested so much for the graduates to gain knowledge and skills that would later be helpful in their journey to better the society.
He added that it was sad that the graduates are still depending on parents for basic needs.
He, therefore, called upon the government to pay them at least Sh10, 000 every month to cater for basic needs and even start a small business as they look for employment.
"Parents sold all the land to educate them. Then you find them nagging their parents....dad or mum please lend me some money to prepare a CV for a job. I need to start a small business and so forth," wondered Mwiria.
"The government should be paying each one of the 200, 000 graduates who graduate yearly from Kenyan universities at least Sh10000 monthly until they get jobs."
