A phone call by ODM Party leader Raila Odinga reportedly helped persuade former Harambee Stars captain Denis Oguta Oliech not to leave Kenya Premier League side Gor Mahia.
Odinga who doubles up as the Club’s Patron had to intervene after Oliech allegedly requested for a release letter from the club over ‘empty’ promises.
Oliech is demanding to be paid over Sh1milion the Club owes him as a sign on fee, with the Club officials informing him that he will be paid the money next month.
On Friday, Odinga called Oliech in the presence Club Chairman Ambrose Rachier, and promised to personally pay him if the Club will fail to fulfill the promise of paying him.
“If they don’t pay you as agreed by April, then I will pay you the money from my pocket,” Odinga told Oliech as quoted by Goal.com.
Oliech joined Gor Mahia on a two-year deal in January. The deal included a monthly salary of Sh350, 000 plus Sh3.5 million sign-on fee.
The sign on fee was to be paid in two installments; the first installment in January and the second in February.
Things seem not to be going well for Oliech and Gor Mahia, if a social media post by one of the officials at the Club is anything to go by.
“If you can't afford me, don't employee me. It is an art of conmanship to negotiate and sign an employment agreement then turn around and claim that my wage bill is too high. It shows that the employer is Planless, Spendthrift (lacks financial prudence), reckless, not creative to create other financial revenues, a scam” posted Judith Nyagi in a KPL Chat Facebook page on Friday.
Nyangi is Gor Mahia's Organizing Secretary. On Sunday, Gor Mahia will face Petro Atletico of Angola in one of the last group matches of the Confederations Cup of Africa in Nairobi. A win will see Gor Mahia storm the quarterfinals.
