Suspected Al-Shabaab militants on Sunday shot dead a serving Member of Parliarment in a series of attacks against the Federal Government of Somalia.
According to RTN Somali TV, the MP, who has since been identified as Osman Elmi Boqore, was shot dead in Kaaran district which is located just a few kilometers from the Kenya-Somalia border.
Just last year, the slain MP Elmi Boqore together with several high profile officials from Somalia visited Mandera and Garissa counties twice in bid to engage the county governments in business deals.
The shooting incident has caused tension in the Kenyan border counties, with locals expressing fear of possible attacks in the near future.
Tensions have been heightened by the ongoing maritime dispute between the Federal Government of Somalia and Kenya.
It is feared that the Al-Shabaab militants might seize the moment to stage attacks under the guise of defending their territory from being 'grabbed' by the neighbouring Kenya.
It should also be noted that Kenya as a country has been playing a significant role in ensuring that peace prevails in the war-torn country.
