Activist Boniface Mwangi has faulted Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko over his move to cancel licences for all Chandarana Foodplus supermarkets in Nairobi.
Sonko’s move was informed by racial bias reported at the supermarket over the weekend.
It was in a leaked email sent out by an alleged “new” staff in the marketing department, Rima Patel.
“We are delighted to inform you that our supermarket chain, would like to give you free vouchers to winner/raffles/best performer/runners-up candidate in upcoming events. As we are now focusing on white people to attract our supermarkets,” read part of the screenshot of the email as reported by Citizen Digital.
However, Mwangi in a tweet says that Sonko’s move is ill-advised because closing down the supermarkets will deny over 1200 current employees jobs.
Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua in response to Mwangi's tweet said though the move taken by the governor could have adverse effects on the employees, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) should step in and address claims of racism at the establishment.
Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) vice chairman George Morara termed Sonko's cancellation of the licenses as "unacceptable".
Chandarana has since apologized saying that the perceived "racists" email was an error committed by Patel who apparently, is not quite proficient in English.
