Makueni Sub-county public health officer Joseph Mutunga said the lot should either desist from releasing effluent to the streets or face prosecution.

Mutunga said most of the landlords have caused health hazards in the town by releasing the seepage on the streets.

"Plot owners in Wote town have been flouting the public health laws by discharging waste anyhow, I advise them to build septic tanks or soak pits to manage their water waste failure to which they will have problems with the law," Mutunga said.

He addressed the press in Wote town on Wednesday.

Mutunga said ward health officers have been directed to issue plot owners with notices concerning the issue to ensure they are brought to speed about the repercussions of their actions.

"Those found culpable risk a fine of between Sh2,000 and Sh15,000 depending on the magnitude of the problem at the time, it can also go higher," he added.

He said the most affected estates with the continuous flow of effluent include Shimo, Slaughter, Nguumo, Kasarani, and Westlands.

Mutunga told the culprits to adhere to the notices so as to avoid being prosecuted.
