Deputy President William Ruto is no doubt the smartest politician in the country and his presidential bid in the coming general elections is open.
It was declared long before the formation of Jubilee party that he is the next presidential candidate.
The self-proclaimed hustler has been swimming in the murky waters of politics for about twenty years and his victory in the coming presidential race will mark the climax of his political career. It will complete the perfect story of a son of a peasant who rose to be the most powerful position in the country.
However, as politics will have it, DP Ruto is not assured of any win despite the promise of his strong allies, his home region, Rift Valley, the Mt. Kenya region and his new territories which he has been able to conquer in his many tours to different counties in the country.
One big test which will determine his fate in 2022 is awaiting him. The DP has always remained silent and avoided the issue of who will be his running mate.
Kisii, Western and the Central regions have been calling the DP to pick one of their ‘own’ leaders to deputise him and this has placed him in a mid hard situation.
Here Ruto will have to make a well-calculated decision that will not leave any party bitter or feel betrayed. A poor decision on this matter will guarantee him an early loss as his critics and rivals will play ‘divide and rule’ tactics leaving confusion in the DP’s camp.
