A section of farmers in Uasin Gishu has hit out at the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri for allowing the importation of maize.
Led by Uasin Gishu Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) director Kipkorir Menjo, the farmers termed the move as uncalled for and ill-intended.
“As farmers from this region, we are really disappointed with the government's move, where do they want us to take our maize and more so they have not paid us the money they owe us,” said Menjo.
They said the government has always failed them yet they expect the country to be food secure.
They spoke to the press in Eldoret on Saturday.
“We will not allow the Agriculture Ministry to import maize since it will deny us market to sell own produce. What did we do to the government for them to continue frustrating us?” wondered Kimutai Kolum, a farmer.
The farmers also questioned where the government had gotten the mone to import maize yet they failed to pay them for maize delivered maize to National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
Recently Kiunjuri said the government would allow millers and traders to import 12 million bags of maize in a bid to cushion Kenyans against higher maize flour prices.
