Even as Miss Tourism beauty contest first approaches, things seems to be getting out of hands for Bernadette Ogega, the millionaire ex-Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology Vice President.
When her name came up as Nyamira County winner, even the county leadership termed her as a stranger, further escalating animosity between her and the constituents.
"I am not aware of such a competition and if it existed, then it's fake," said Tourism executive Peter Muga.
But the self proclaimed philanthropist is not moved by the negativity from her backyard but had instead soldiered on to clinch the ultimate prize.
Two fierce camps have emerged with one led by award-winning journalist Nyambega Gisesa that supports her big while another unstructured camp opposing her bid.
For Nyambega, 'no matter the process, first vote for the county and discuss the circumstances later' philosophy is guiding his team.
And the opponents accused her of sneaking in stat the expense of other contestants, vowing to vote for Alexina, the representative from Kisii County.
"She's an imposter. We shall go for Alexina who competed openly and was overwhelmingly voted for," said Carol Kwamboka, a youth leader.
Later on this month, the country will know the ultimate winner, as mobilisation for voting intensified online and offline.
In a past interview, Ms. Ogega admitted using millions from her business to succeed in beauty pageant competitions.
