Police in Marallal, Samburu county are holding 16 men accused of engaging in a number of major crimes, including rape and robbery.
The group was arrested during a crackdown on Saturday, over claims of terrorizing area residents, and are also facing allegations of burglary.
According to Samburu County Police Commander Karanja Muiruri, the police have also identified witnesses who will testify against the suspects in court on Monday.
"We have 16 suspects in custody, we have already identified witnesses and we will take them to court on Monday,” he was quoted by the Nation.
The police officers drawn from several units recovered an assortment of items thought to be stolen and a homemade gun in their houses.
Marallal Nyumba Kumi Chairperson Gulleid Mohammed said that the group is accused of raping women and girls in the area, and has been troubling locals even at daytime.
The gang has been terrorising residents day and night and raping women and girls,” he said, adding that they will ensure that all criminals in the area are arrested and charged.
On her side, Nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) Aisha Mohammed called for stern punitive measures against the group if found guilty, to serve as a lesson to them and discourage their colleagues yet to be arrested from crime.
Karanja called upon residents to cooperate with the police by offer information to help in arresting other suspects.
