During the festive season, many people travel to spend time with family and friends upcountry, commonly referred to as "ushago".
However, some of the people living in the cities take some weird habits with them upcountry that annoy their relatives back in the village.
Below are some weird habits city dwellers take with them upcountry during the festive season:
1. Taking pictures with animals
Most people living in the cities get fascinated when they see different types of domestic animals during their visits upcountry.
Some even take photos with the animals which secretly annoy the village residents.
City dwellers need to understand that not every animal is a pet.
In upcountry, most people keep animals for other important roles rather than just being pets.
You better avoid changing the roles.
2. "Indecent" dressing codes
The older generation that forms the major population upcountry was trained to dress "decently" and probably taught you the same before you went to the city.
Most city dwellers take their "indecent" dressing habits to their villages during the festive season.
Please remember to dress appropriately when you visit upcountry.
You can rock your miniskirts and sexy dresses when you go back to the city.
Most people upcountry find these dressing codes indecent and would probably conclude that people living in cities lack good morals.
3. Being always on the phone
Generally, people upcountry are not very much addicted to their phones compared to those in the cities.
They would find it disrespectful when you are always on your phone whenever they try to run conversations.
Kindly bond with your relatives during this festive season and avoid spending too much time on the phone.
This should be a precious family time since you only get to be with them once in a long while.
The festive season should be strictly family time.
4.Mind your language
Most people living upcountry would prefer communicating in mother tongue rather than "borrowed" English or Kiswahili.
Most city dwellers are fond of communicating in English or Kiswahili to their village counterparts while most of these people don't understand these languages well.
Funny enough, these people know you were talking fluently in mother tongue before you went to the city, so in their opinion, you are pretending.
Try and learn your native languages whenever you visit upcountry so that you can easily communicate with your relatives.
Don't feel too special or look down upon your people, be proud of your native language.
5. Changing their favourite TV channels and music
If the village dwellers prefer watching the news and local programs, don't bring your "city influence " by changing to soap operas and other international programmes.
Your "inappropriate" videos, music and movies will upset them.
You better adapt to their style, as they say, when you go to Rome, you do what the Romans do.
You can watch your programmes when you go back to the city.
