As Kenyans mark World Mental Health Day, a mother of three in Kisii county whose husband is mentally challenged is crying for justice.

Rachel Nyaboke Achuka, from Getare, Nyatieko location Kitutu Chache South sub-county lost her family piece of land to an individual who took advantage of her spouse’s mental state.

Nyaboke claimed the buyer who was a teacher purported to have signed a sale agreement with her husband, Robert Mokaya alias Benedict Achuka.

According to Nyaboke her husband was still ill and was receiving treatment at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Accusing the buyer of using fraudulent documents to dispossess the family of its land, she expressed shock that the hospital management and area chief had disowned her husband’s mental condition.

Nyaboke said whenever she sought assistance at the hospital and from the chief, she was chased away. She flushed contradictory letters from the hospital indicating her husband ‘s condition while the chief had written to the Registrar of Births, Kisii to issue a birth certificate to one of Achuka’s children.

Nyaboke petitions the Interior ministry cabinet secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i to assist her recover the piece of land.

The land in dispute measuring 52 ft by 119 ft at was bought at sh. 50,000 in 1995 and allegedly sold out in 2012 at the same price.

This comes barely two weeks since six Kisii Land Registry officials, among them the regional lands boss were arrested at the Kisii Lands registry offices by the Ethics and Anti-corruption officials.

The agency officials had staked at the lands offices filming suspicious operations before they pounced on the officials. 

During the raid, Some crafty land officers were caught as they received bribes from the public. 

The Kisii lands office had been the epicentre of protests from land activists pressing for the sacking of the Lands registrar.

During the raid, several files were carted away and treated money was recovered during the operation led by the EACC South Nyanza office director David Kang'ara.
