Opposition leader Raila Odinga is said to have called several Nairobi County Assembly MCAs urging them to stop Beatrice Elachi’s impeachment on Thursday, sources say.

According to sources, Raila made calls to several MCAs hours before they impeached Elachi in a special sitting convened on Thursday.

According county MCAs who sought anonymity, the ODM leader pleaded with them to halt the impeachment motion and allow consultations.

Raila is also said to have called Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok who is also the county assembly minority whip with the message to halt the proceedings against Elachi.

The  MCAs however disregarded Raila’s message and went on to impeach Elachi.

"The former Prime Minister made calls to save Elachi but the calls were unfruitful," an MCA said.

One hundred and three (103) MCAs out of 122 voted to impeach Elachi. The MCAs accused Elachi of allegedly contravening the House Standing Orders.

They also accused Elachi of allegedly intimidating county assembly staff.

Elachi has however obtained temporary  court orders halting her impeachment.
