Kisii town which is popularly known as Bosongo is located at the southwestern part of Kenya in the Gusii highlands, Nyanza province. It is a distance of 390 kilometers from the capital city, Nairobi.
It was formerly known as Getembe before getting its new name Bosongo. The name "Bosongo" was derived from the name “Abasongo” a Kisii word for the white people who had colonised them. The white people had colonized the Kisii people and then settled there.
Kisii town was originally formed by the British soldiers.
It was originally established by British soldiers who were being forced to retreat from Lake Victoria due to heavy gunfire from German soldiers' gunboats during the Great War.
This was in the early 20th century when it was made the District Headquarters of Kisii region and the south Nyanza.
Kisii is now surrounded by various people from different communities from across Kenya for trade. It has gradually developed in terms of business and is growing to a metropolitan town.
