Teachers from North Eastern have expressed their anger following a decision by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to reject a proposal to lower the minimum entry points to teachers training colleges (TTC).
The teachers led by Mr Ali Abdi Hussein, the assistant national treasury of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) North Eastern branch said President Uhuru Kenyatta should intervene in the matter.
Mr Abdi said President Kenyatta should intervene to ensure the education of students especially from marginalised counties is not affected by the decision from TSC.
Speaking at a Garissa Hotel, Mr Abdi said the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) had recommended a review of entry grade into the teachers colleges from C to D+.
“The Knut leadership from this region feels that the recent statement by the Teachers Service Commission is an attack on education. We want President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene immediately,” he said.
Mr Abdi called on TSC to stop wrangles with the Education Ministry and hold meetings to address issues affecting the education sector in marginalised counties.
According to Mr Abdi, schools in the region have been affected by lack of teachers and security which in turn has affected the performance of their children.
He accused TSC of coming up with policies that do not benefit teachers or schools in the region adding that stakeholders from the region should be consulted when making such major decisions.
“We demand that the employer stops unnecessary wrangles with the stakeholders and take real issues through consultations. In the recent past, colleges have failed to attract trainees due to harassment and frustration by the employer,” he added.
