The 2022 general election may be four years away but the momentum is already building up ahead of that crucial election that may make or break political careers.
As he has done over the past 20 years, ODM leader Raila Odinga will be a crucial player in that election; whether he will contest for the country's top seat or not.
But what is the likely scenario in 2022? Will Raila pull a surprise and support Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho for the country's top seat? Or will he make another stab? Probably, supporting the Mombasa Governor may be the best option.
At 46 years in 2022, Joho will have the energy to traverse the country pitching for his election unlike the former Premier who will be 77. As such, Joho may be the best weapon against Deputy President William Ruto who will be 56.
Further, President Uhuru Kenyatta's most recent statement while in Nandi County, may complicate Raila's political game plan.
Whereas many had expected that the recent handshake between Uhuru and Raila may influence 2022 politics, Uhuru technically dismissed such perception when he insisted that his 2013 deal with the DP still stands.
Where does this leave Raila? Probably he will have to go back to the political drawing board to identify someone capable of taking over from him and face Ruto.
