The World Bank through Kenya Devolution Support Programme has reportedly cancelled Sh600 million grant to Nyamira County amid escalating scandal over misuse of previous allocations.
At least Sh20 million of Sh39 million wired to support the programme could not be accounted for even as officers incharge engaged in blame games.
In a letter by Accounting Officer in Finance and Planning ministry Mr. Lawrence Nyangena, he specifically demands to know how the money was used by certain officials in various departments.
"I am specifically writing to your to enquire on the breakdown how you used the aforementioned sum of money," a letter to Rindley Nyambane, a legal advisor to the county government read.
A senior official in Finance Department confirmed that the mix up had caused cancellation by the World Bank adding that the AO should take blame.
"Most of the money could not be accounted for and that is why World Bank cancelled the Sh600 million grant. The Accounting Officer should take blame. I don't understand why he just decided to wire the money to specific people to pay others," he said.
Sources within the county government claim that the money was wired through the accounts of Junior officials who facilitated the fraud.
Director Public Participation Mr. Dan Onyancha, whose department is the worst hit, confirmed receiving the letter but denied fraud.
"I have been participating KICOSCA games and I hear a letter was sent. Even though World Bank cancelled funding, I don't think it's as a result of fraud."
This comes as locals piled pressure on the assembly to investigate the claims.
While the assembly has remained mum, activist Vincent Omao has vowed to petition the speaker and EACC over the matter.
