Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company (KIWASCO) has warned its esteemed customers against post-treating water supplied by the company at their homes.
In a statement they shared through their facebook page, the company warned that post-treating KIWASCO water using treatment agents such as water guard may lead to the coronation of the water.
This is as a result of the high level of water hyacinth which has covered Migosi gulf of Lake Victoria affecting the quality of raw water.
According to the statement, the long infestation of the weed has resulted in the formation of iron which if treated using chlorinated products may pose serious health problems to the consumer.
The occurrence of iron may affect our customers who may post infect the product using home treatment products such as water guard and other forms of water treatment that may have chlorinated compounds...we, therefore, advice our customers not to post chlorinate KIWASCO water" read part of the statement.
The company also clarified that despite the formation of iron, the water was still safe for human consumption since it does not contain pathogens.
"We wish to assure our customers that the water does not contain pathogens that may cause water-borne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea," read the statement.
Water hyacinth has adversely affected the social and economic activities of Kisumu city.
In collaboration with county government of Kisumu, national government and Ugandan based company, the former prime minister Raila Odinga initiated a programme to remove the weed from the lake.
