Luo names are easily noticeable even by outsiders as a result of their O and A sounds, with the O appearing as the fist letter in most male names and A in the female ones.
They are also named basing on the surroundings and the conditions under which they were born, making it very easy to tell something about someone just by looking at their names.
However, there exist a set of names which have some nasty meanings.
Here are three leading names with such meanings;
1. Okwiri
Okwiri is a Luo name for the male, with the female, though rare, supposed to take the Akwiri nature, with the A meant to give it the Luo female tag.
Okwiri originated from the word ‘Kwiri’ which translates to ‘poison’ in English.
2. Olweny
Many know of the former Muhoroni lawmaker and Education Assistant Minister Ayiecho Olweny, who is so far among the few Luos with the name to make it to the national arena.
Olweny emanates from the word ‘Lweny’ which means a fight, war or battle. For instance, army officers are called ‘Jo-lweny’ (people of war) in Dholuo.
Basing on the Luo naming procedure, a person baring the name could have been born during a war or in a war-torn region.
3. Oguok
Oguok originates from the word ‘guok’ which simply means a dog.
Similarly, persons bearing the name could have had their births associated with dogs or showed love for dogs from the start and so on.
