Former Naivasha MP John Mututho has hit out at Kibera MP Ken Okoth for pushing legalization and use of marijuana (bhang) in Kenya.
Mututho says that Okoth’s proposal is misplaced and should not be entertained at all costs.
The former chairman of the National Agency for the Campaign against Drug Abuse (NACADA) says that decriminalizing the drug will hamper the fight against drug abuse in the country.
Mututho argues that many young people are struggling to get out of drug abuse and that legalizing bhang will be a blow to government initiatives to rescue young people from drugs.
“I am shocked that an honorable Member of Parliament can propose legalization of dangerous drugs,” he said in an interview with a local daily on Sunday.
Mututho said that the Kibera MP does not have the interests of young people at heart.
“He should be ashamed of himself and I want to tell him that we will lobby to have his proposal rejected in Parliament,” he added.
Mututho accused Okoth of using the proposal to seek popularity.
On Friday last week, Okoth revealed that he has written to the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi seeking for facilitation in preparation of the Bill.
In his proposal, Okoth argues that 'marijuana' or bhang has medicinal value and can help boost the country’s economy if legalized.
Kibera residents have reacted differently to the proposal with majority opposing it.
