Angry passengers at one of the bus stations in the city, on Monday night hit out at a section of matatu operators for overcharging them.
The incident occurred at Yaya Centre, after a section of passengers protested an increase in bus fare from thirty to seventy shillings.
The matatus were headed to Lavington and Kawangware.
Attempts by police officers to force the operators to charge the passengers thirty shillings each, did not bear fruit, as the operators insisted on charging seventy shillings per person.
The exchange of words got heated, forcing the police to disperse the passengers, most of whom opted to walk to their respective residences.
A section of the passengers blamed the matatu operators for using flimsy reasons to increase the fare.
One of the drivers said the increase in fare is as a result of traffic jam that is usually experienced at that time of the day.
According to him, matatu operators waste a lot of time when there is traffic, forcing them to increase fare charges as a way of making up for the wasted time.
"Normally we charge thirty shillings. But due to jam, we are forced to increase the fare because we spend and waste a lot of time in the jam," one of the drivers said.
