The mismanagement of the multi-billion shillings Galana-Kulalu irrigation project has affected food production in Kenya, Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has said.
According to the county boss, the poor leadership at the project has hampered food production in the region.
Kingi now wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to allow the Kilifi and Tana River county governments to be given the mandate to manage the project.
The governor said that the move will with no doubt change the food situation in the region once the project been handed over the county governments.
He noted that there has been massive corruption in the irrigation project, a situation that has affected it in different ways as far as production is concerned. He exuded confidence that the project has the capacity to feed the entire nation only if the management is changed with immediate effect.
“Since agriculture is devolved, our plea to the President is that the project should be handed over to the two and in the few months we will show you the results,” said Kingi, as quoted by the Daily Nation.
The county boss also noted that the country has been facing food shortage over the decades because irrigation projects have not been taken seriously by the past regimes.
Kwale, Tana River and Kilifi are among counties that have been affected by food shortages as the drought continues to bite.
