The MCAs, who are 16 in number, were expected to appear before the anti-graft body to share information on the unethical conduct in the removal of Speaker Beatrice Elachi.

A letter from the commission had warned that they could face action if they failed to honor the promise.

County Assembly Majority Leader Abdi Guyo, however, said that the lawmakers will appear before the corruption watchdog after the completion of the four-day retreat in Mombasa.  “We were within the law to impeach the Speaker so we cannot be intimidated by anyone.

However, we will honour the summons,” Mr Guyo said on Wednesday. Confirming the refusal of the lawmakers to appear before the commission, EACC spokesperson Yasin Amaro said that the members said that they were away, adding that they have verified the same.

The MCAs have been put on the spot for allegedly breaching Article 75(1) (c) of the Constitution.  The MCAs summoned include Mr Guro, Ngando's Peter Wahinya, Waithaka MCA Anthony Kiragu, Minority Whip Peter Imwatok, Kileleshwa MCA Elias Otieno and Nominated MCA Mary Njambi. Others are Doris Ngoyo, Leah Supuko, Laura Mwololo, Ruth Mainigi, Nancy Maole, Grace Muthami and Susan Kavaya.
