A form one student was killed and three other minors left nursing injuries following thunderstorms and lightning strikes in Kisii.
The incident is reported to have occurred on Saturday at Marani playing ground in Kitutu Chache North Constituency, Kisii County.
Confirming the incident, Kisii County Commissioner Godfrey Kigochi said the deceased, Newton Mirera Ontita, who was 15 years old was among the football fans who had turned up to watch a match staged at the field.
"Ontita met his death when thunderstorms and lightning struck while they were sheltering themselves at a shade in the playing ground. Three others were injured and were taken to Marani sub-county hospital where they were treated and discharged," said Kigochi.
Speaking during an interview with journalists in Kisii town, the county commissioner appealed to locals to be cautious especially during the raining season, since thunderstorms and lightning strikes are common in the area.
Kigochi further challenged local leaders to help residents set up lightning and thunderstorm protection devices to prevent such deaths.
The body of the deceased was taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue.
