The relationship between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto will be put to test this week after the DP launched an attack towards Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti.
Ruto said Kinoti, who has received backing from President Kenyatta on the fight against graft, does not have the constitutional mandate to investigate economic crimes.
Speaking on Sunday at Ainamoi constituency, the DP seemed to contradict his boss Uhuru when he said that the DCI does not have any legal backing to investigate graft in the country.
“The fight against corruption must proceed on the basis of correct information and by competent institutions that have the constitutional mandate and institutional capacity so that we can have results,” the DP said.
The DP said the current war on graft is fought on a ‘political narrative’.
“We will refuse and reject any attempt by people to put together a political narrative using corruption and propaganda to drive a scheme to undermine Government programmes and projects, with the aim of destroying the Big Four agenda,” he added.
Speaking in his constituency on Sunday, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator, who is an ardent supporter of the DP, also called on Kinoti to stop leading the war.
“Kinoti has no constitutional mandate to fight graft. The constitutional body with the mandate to fight corruption is EACC, so wewe Kinoti leave the work to EACC uende upigane na wezi wa bank,” Murkomen said.
Kinoti and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji have in the past received the President’s public support.
Sunday’s remark by Ruto and his foot soldier contradicting the President will likely worsen the relationship between Uhuru and Ruto camps in Jubilee.
