Five employees of the Nairobi county government were on Monday arraigned in court and charged with conspiring to defraud the county and abuse office.

The five, Nairobi County Assembly Clerk Jacob Ngwele, Deputy Clerk Adah Onyango, Principal Accountant Philomena Nzuki,  Senior Procurement Officer James Kaguma and Senior Finance and planning officer Fredrick Mwangi were charged over a questionable tender to supply books amounting to Sh997, 926.

The five who appeared before Anti-Corruption Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi were also charged with willful failure to adhere to procurement laws and fraudulent acquisition of public property.

Raphael Mwinzi, the director of the Primara ventures who failed to supply the books despite receiving payment from the county government was also charged.

The county officials denied the charges.

The court freed them on Sh600, 000 bond with similar surety and alternative cash bail of Sh300, 000.

The officials were ordered to deposit their passports in court pending their trial which is set to start on September 12.

Governor Mike Sonko has maintained that he will not tolerate corrupt officials.

The Nairobi Governor has since asked  county staff who engage in  corruption activities to be ready to carry their own crosses.
