The National Lands Commission (NLC) Chairman Mohamed Swazuri has assured landowners within the proposed Eldoret southern bypass that they will be fully compensated.
Swazuri says the compensation has delayed as the Treasury is yet to release funds to facilitate the exercise.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Thursday, the NLC chairman said as soon as the funds are released, all eligible individuals will be paid their compensation.
“We are through with the schedule and the list of people to be compensated, we are only waiting for the financial year to start for the funds to be released,” said Swazuri.
“Let the beneficiaries stay calm as we process their dues since it is not our fault and it is not our wish to delay their payments,” he added.
This comes barely a week after a section of locals in Eldoret town whose land is within the bypass demanded that the NLC hastens the processing and payment of their compensation.
The locals had warned that they will stage a demonstration that will paralyze the already ongoing construction works for the bypass if they are not paid their compensation.
President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the construction of the 32.9 kilometres Eldoret bypass in 2017 and all land and property owners that would be affected by the project were expected to be compensated by the government.
