A number of Nairobi residents are set to be rendered homeless after Kenya Power issued a demolition alert.
KP has aletrted some residents to vacate by December 24th. According to the company, some homeowners in Buruburu, Njiru, Mowlem, Saika, Umoja Phase One, Inner Core, Tena, Embakasi Baraka Estate, Tassia Estate and Mathare Valley slums to vacate or face demolition.
In the latest round of demolition, areas outside Nairobi will also be affwected. Some parts of Nakuru and Mombasa will be affected.
According to Kenya Power, the affected houses were illegally constructed on land meant to contruct power lines. In total, Kenya Powerr has identified about 1000 houses across the country for demolition.
However, a section of residents has raised concerns about the demolitions.
“All government offices will not be working when the notice expires. Isn't that suspicious? Let them come, we will take it as it comes,” said Calvin Odera a youth leader in Buru Buru.
However, the company has also been accused of harassing the resident. A claim denied by Kenya Power.
“These were not goons but hired casuals supervised by Kenya Power team and escorted by armed police. The area has security challenges because of the existence of armed gangs,” said Kenya Power Security Services Manager Geoffrey Kigen.
